A bill, HF 2605, is under consideration in the Iowa House that could impose limits on the amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) allowed in hemp products sold in the state. Originally granting the Department of Health and Human Services the authority to determine THC limits, an amendment proposed by Rep. Steven Holt suggests specific limits be set in the legislative code—2 milligrams of THC per serving and 10 milligrams per container.
Holt argues that the hemp industry in Iowa needs regulation, stating, “It’s the wild, wild west in Iowa right now.” However, business owners, like Ashley Powell of CBD American Shaman, express concerns that such limits could severely impact their sales, especially for products with THC content below 15 milligrams per serving. The bill also includes provisions making it illegal to sell consumable hemp products to individuals under 21 and for those under 21 to consume such products.
