In a move that has raised concerns about its impact on in vitro fertilization (IVF), Iowa’s House of Representatives, dominated by Republicans, passed a bill criminalizing the death of an “unborn person.”
The proposed legislation seeks to amend existing language related to penalties for terminating or causing serious injury to a “human pregnancy” by redefining the term as an “individual organism from fertilization to live birth.” Democrats raised concerns, referencing a recent Alabama case that classified frozen embryos as children, affecting IVF practices.
The bill will need Senate approval and the governor’s signature to become law.
