In a verdict that reverberates through media circles, former Des Moines news anchor Sonya Heitshusen has lost her age discrimination lawsuit against WHO-TV and Nexstar Media Group, Inc.
Heitshusen, who worked at WHO-TV for 17 years, alleged age and gender discrimination when denied an on-air contract in 2020. The trial, spanning eight days in Polk County District Court, concluded with the jury ruling in favor of the defendants. While Nexstar cited a reduction in workforce as the reason for Heitshusen’s departure, she framed it as a broader issue affecting older female staff.
Despite the setback, Heitshusen remains resolute in her fight against age and gender discrimination in the industry.”
