In a significant move, the Iowa House has given its approval to House File 2523, a bill that places more control in the hands of parents regarding their children’s social media activities.

The legislation mandates that social media platforms must obtain written permission from a parent or guardian before allowing a minor to create an account. Additionally, these companies are obliged to provide guardians with access to their child’s account, allowing visibility into messages, posts, and control over privacy settings.

Parents can also regulate the amount of time their child spends on the platform. The bipartisan bill received widespread support, passing with an 88 to 6 vote.
