In a move to enhance school safety, Iowa lawmakers are progressing a bill, House Study Bill 692, which allocates state funds to school districts. The funds, up to $25,000 per district, are designated for training staff and purchasing infrastructure related to arming employees.

This bill aligns with House File 2586, passed last week, allowing trained staff members to carry firearms. The new legislation would further support schools in acquiring firearm detection software, establishing a grant program through the Department of Homeland Security.

The software aims to alert school employees and responders of visible, unholstered firearms on school property. Additionally, the bill mandates schools to possess emergency radios capable of contacting law enforcement.
