In a concerning development, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in Sioux County, Iowa, affecting a commercial-layer chicken flock. This adds to the growing list of cases in the state, including Benton, Buena Vista, Hamilton, Kossuth, Pocahontas, and Guthrie Counties.

Officials emphasize the importance of recognizing signs of HPAI, which may manifest as a sudden increase in bird deaths, lethargy, decreased egg production, and various physical abnormalities in affected birds. Despite the outbreak, authorities reassure the public that poultry products remain safe to consume, urging adherence to proper handling and cooking practices, including cooking to an internal temperature of 165˚F.

To ensure a swift response, possible cases are mandated to be reported to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at (515) 281-5305. The confirmation of HPAI underscores the need for heightened vigilance within the poultry industry and among consumers to curb the spread of the virus.
