In East Dubuque, Thanksgiving held a different significance for United Auto Workers (UAW), who have dedicated over a month to the picket line near the East Dubuque Nitrogen Fertilizer plant. For these workers, the holiday was less about feasting and more about advocating for what they believe are fair wages.
Local 1391 Union President Doug Glab outlined their central demands: a 4% annual increase for the next four years and contractual safeguards for 401k matches. Despite the holiday, the picketers stood firm, underscoring the gravity of their cause.
Glab emphasized their commitment, stating, “This is something that we 100% believe in, and we have to stay strong as a unit, as a body, as a union to keep the fight going.” Their presence during the holiday serves as a testament to their dedication.
Expressing gratitude for the support received, Glab and his colleagues are optimistic as they approach a pivotal meeting with the company on November 28th. “Hopefully we can come to a resolve. I don’t know for sure, but I am hoping that for me and the rest of the guys here,” said Glab. As they persist, the UAW picketers are not just advocating for themselves but for what they see as justice in the realm of fair wages and workers’ rights.
